Three
enterprising Third Year students of Sou Venutai Chavan Polytechnic
(S.V.C.P.) Pune, have built an amazing Three-wheeled ALL TERRAIN
VEHICLE (3W-ATV) as part of their final project for their Mech.
Engg. diploma.
The three students who jointly did this project are Mr. Karanraj
S. Gujar, Mr. Rohit D. Jadhav and Mr. Saurabh D. Ambure. Technical
Advisor for this project was Mr. Shrikant A. Chavan, assisted by
Mr. Rajat Misra. Stunt riders seen in the pictures are Mr. Snehal
A. Chavan and Mr. Adityaraj S. Gurjar.
The
power-plant used is a stock 4-speed Yamaha RX 135 engine. The three-
wheeler uses two 10-inch rear wheels and one 8-inch front wheel.
Front suspension is on modified twin forks and rear mono-shock suspension
is taken from Fiat Padmini. There is no differential used on the
rear axle, which is driven by a conventional chain-sprocket set.
A disc brake is used on the rear axle.
What needed development and fabrication were the axles, swing-arm
and, Expansion Chamber to boost power. A K&N filter air was
used and corresponding up-jetting was done in the carburetor. Details
can be seen in the accompanying
photographs.
The ATV was tested on absolutely kuccha lands of loose earth, steep
slopes, mounds of gravel, un-even levels and other un-hospitable
terrain, and it traversed all these obstacles easily. There is no
reverse gear in this ATV, and to move it backwards the driver has
to turn the rear wheels backwards with his feet as shown in the
picture. The ATV can also do Front-Wheelie as well as Side-Wheelie
as shown in the pictures. However, this needs a lot of training
and practice.
Compared to the regular four-wheel ATVs advertised and sold in the
market, this is a much simpler ATV and handles all kinds of terrain
with ease. The cost break-up of this vehicle is as follows:
Engine
Rs………………………………….14,000
3 Tyres Rs…………………………………17,000
Rear disc Rs………………………………..5,500
Front suspension Rs……………………..15,000
Rear axle Rs………………………………..5,000
Expansion Chamber Rs…………………...2500
Wheel flange Rs……………………………4,000
Swing-arm Rs………………………………2,000
Rear suspension Rs……………………….1,500
TOTAL Rs.66,500
