Yamaha FZ & R15 Modifications: Article by Dilip Bam

Yamaha’s TWO flagship bikes in the 150 cc class, the FZ and R15 are purpose built. The FZ is for looks and R15 is for performance. What Prakash Kunthe of Pune has done is, enhanced the performance of the looker FZ and enhanced the looks of the performer R15.

1>>The air cooled, 2-valve, 5-speed, 153 cc FZ, produces 14 PS at 7500 rpm at a compression ratio of 9.5 using a BS 26 carburetor. The FZ has disc brake front and drum brake rear and rides on FAT 100/80 X 17 tire front and FATTER 140/60 X 17 tire rear.

The stock FZ does zero to sixty in @ 6.3 seconds, zero to 100 in @ 21 seconds and a top speed of @ 112-113. By reworking the exhaust silencer, Prakash Kunthe has been able to considerably enhance its performance. With the Prakash Kunthe modified free-flow exhaust, the FZ can do zero to sixty in 5.2 seconds, zero to 100 in 16 seconds and hit a top speed of @ 120. This free-flow exhaust is priced at Rs.6500/- in Pune. The equivalent Japanese exhaust is priced at 16500/-, i.e. Rs.10000/- more. Outstation orders can also be executed. Enhanced performance of FZ should be accompanied by enhanced stopping power. So Prakash has fitted a rear disc brake to the FZ, as can be seen in the foto. Rear disc brake fitment is quite easy. 2>>The liquid cooled, 4-valve, 6-speed, 149.8 cc R15 produces 17 PS at 8500 rpm at compression ratio of 10.4 using electronic fuel injection. The R15 has disc brakes both front and rear and rides on THIN 80/90 X 17 tire front and 100/80 X 17 tire rear. Prakash has done an excellent enhancement of looks of the R15 by modifying the paint job and graphics. Cost is Rs.15000/- (fifteen thousand). Obviously paint job cannot be done outside Pune.
