Better Riding – Going over obstacles on road
What should one do when there’s an obstruction in the middle of a road? OverDrive (April ’09) provides three options…

Brake
Once you’ve decided to brake, initiate weight transfer with the rear brake, bring the front brake progressively up to full power and come to a fast and quick stop. If the rear wheel locks up, don’t worry much about it – letting up on the rear brake just a bit will handle it.

Swerve
The swerve is relatively straight-forward but has huge benefits in this situation. You push the lft handlebar grip away from you to turn left on the bike. And then you add a pull on the right at the same time. This increases the intensity of the input. To complete it, as soon as you’ve cleared the obstacle, you push hard on the right grip while pulling on the left grip to regain your line.

Go Over It
This applies only to obstacles that the motorcycle can actually cross. So to go over the obstacle, you brake as hard as you can before you hit the obstacle and just before you hit it, stand on the pegs – remember to keep your knees pressed had into the tank to absorb sudden shocks of the wheels hitting the obstacle. You should feel the front wheel go over the obstacle pretty easily. Now as the middle of the bike crosses over, it’s time to rapidly but gently get back on the front brake and lean forward to similarly release pressure on the rear suspension, for the very same purpose.

Which One?

The simplest case is that there isn’t any traffic and there is adequate space to brake to a stop. Case two – there is traffic in the oncoming lane and so you swerve around it. Finally, if there isn’t place to swerve or brake, you must go over it.
