 Better Riding –Accidents.

There’s no getting away from it. Accidents do happen on motorcycles. Overdrive (Oct. ’09) gives five pointers to avoid a crash and five pointers one should keep in mind after the crash.

Before the Crash

Ride Responsibly

One needs to pay attention while riding and it is always better to be on the safer side. One can glean tips from flipart.com and infibeam.com or participate in a track day or buy books on better riding.

Tell your Friends
It is important to inform friends and family before heading out on a long biking trip as they can keep track in an emergency.

Give It Up
It is best to avoid driving when one is upset, tired or sleepy or on days like Diwali and Holi when risk of poor visibility is higher. One should also avoid riding at dusk when visibility is low and during the first rains when skidding is a common problem.

Wear Gear
One should wear all gears at all times. Full stop.

Emergency Information

Keep a copy of emergency information on you or in your wallet or on the back of your phone at all times. It should contain your name, blood group, address, emergency contact person and number and doctor information.

After the Crash

Do Not Move
Don’t immediately move after a crash – check yourself, catalogue your injuries, wriggle toes and move joints.

Move
After checking yourself – move to a safer location and check belongings.

First-Aid
Carry a small first-aid kit in your bike and use it. A crepe bandage, antiseptic, cotton wool and some cotton bandages are a good bet.

Should You Remove Your Helmet
If you feel that you have hurt your neck or spine – don’t remove the helmet.

Get X-Rays
Get whatever is hurting x-rayed. Don’t just let it be.

Helping others in a Crash

Out of Harms Way
Be responsible and shield the injured from flowing traffic. Do not move the person before assessing the injury.

Secure Belongings
Try and keep the biker’s belongings safe and store the bike keys carefully.

Tell The Family
Inform the rider’s family or friends and keep in touch with them if you are accompanying the injured to hospital.
