Who wants to be a pillion-aire
A pillion rider on a super bike plays an active role in the quality of a ride. A poor pillion can be as dangerous as a poor rider. Thus it is useful to keep in mind a few pillion riding tips...Autocar (Sept. ’09) gives some tips...

First and foremost, never sit behind a person with questionable riding skills. Enjoying a ride as a pillion has a lot to do with your confidence in the person sitting at the handlebar.

Wearing the right clothing and gear is important when riding pillion as well. A snug-fitting full face helmet is a must. Jeans are by far the most comfortable and shows with ample ankle support provide the best protection to the pillion’s feet.

Sitting sideways is an absolute no-no and once astride the bike, feet should be kept firmly on the footrests and eyes on the road ahead. As speeds build up, weight should be shifted towards the front of the bike by leaning against the rider’s back. This aids the rider’s control especially under braking.

Super-bikes are capable of lightning quick acceleration and equally prompt braking, both of which can easily unsettle or even throw a pillion off the bike in an instant.

While accelerating it is imperative to hold on to his/her waist, locking your forearms with your hands in a firm clasp. While slowing down grip the fuel tank and tighten your thighs around the rider’s waist for support.

Riding two-up is trickiest in corners. Pillions have a tendency to assist the rider by leaning more than necessary. This is unsafe as the bike then tilts into the corner more than the rider expects. Thus it is good practice to keep your body neutral and mirror the rider’s movements. This helps the rider judge the transfer of weight on the motorcycle better.

Agree upon a few hand signals that allow for basic communication while on the move. For instance, tapping the rider’s thigh can indicate that you want him/her to slow down.

Do not egg riders to push for speeds outside their limits and finally never ride pillion under the influence of an intoxicant.

The addition of a pillion greatly influences a super-bike’s acceleration, braking and handling characteristics. As a pillion the onus is on you to invest time in understanding the rider’s style and what he/she expects from you as a passenger. Good postures coupled with co-ordination with the rider are ingredients that will ensure a safe, fun pillion experience.
