KINETIC GF125 : Road test by Dilip Bam

THE ENGINE:
The GF engine is the first of its kind in India. It has four valves - two inlet, and two exhaust. This has much relevance to its power and torque curve characteristics. This is a high revving engine, and torque peaks to ONE Kilogram-Metre between 7000 rpm and 7500 rpm. Max. horsepower is 12 BHP at 8500 rpm. Further contributing to its high revv-high end nature, is the fact of its over-square bore x stroke dimensions of 57mm x 48.8 mm, giving a pot size of 124.6 cc. A Compression Ratio (CR) of 9.92:1 makes a further contribution to the hi-revv nature, yet improving fuel average. The two inlet valves breathe in through a Keihin-20mm venturi carburettor via twin, oiled, poly-urethene foam air cleaner elements, and the two exhaust valves exhale through the chunky shining silencer to give and unmatched smooth power delivery.

The engine is designed for burning unleaded, 87 octane, petrol, ordinarily available at our pumps. The petrol is ignited in the engine by a micro-processor based digital CDI having variable advance to give maximum fuel average at varying engine revvs. The engine idles between 1300 and 1500 rpm (ideal 1400 rpm). Forced pressure lubrication is achieved by a gear pump, from a generous, 1.3 litre capacity, wet sump. Quantity of SAE 20 W 40 oil required at oil change is 950 cc. This oil is kept clean by a tandem of wire mesh and micronic paper filters. Both oil and filter need to replaced every 3500 kms.

ERGONOMICS & OTHER ACCOUTREMENTS:
The 13.7 litre fuel tank has a usable reserve of ONE litre. Unladen weight of the bike is 135 kg. A largish wheelbase of 1292 mm gives the bike great stability. Tyres are 2.75 x 18 front and 3.oo x 18 rear. A 220 mm dia ventilated disc brake on the front wheel gives tremendous stopping ability, further enhanced by a 130 mm dia drum

Front suspension is on twin forks with 120 mm travel. A pair of five-way adjustable absorbers with 70 mm travel do the job at rear. A rectangular cross section rear swing-arm ensures a flex-free ride. Even the sub-frame for mounting the pillion footrests has been designed keeping visual beauty in mind. Seat height is 790 mm. A ground clearance of 195 mm prevents anything from hitting the underbelly even on the roughest roads.

In addition to the electric start, there is a kicker, which being 'S' shaped, does not foul with the RH footrest. The 14 cm distance between RH footrest and foot pedal for the rear brake gives excellent leverage - more than most other bikes - making rear brake even more effective. The LH instru-pod has a speedo, odo, and the oh-so-convenient trip meter, while the RH pod has the revv counter and fuel gauge. A filler hole for engine oil is very conveniently located, which explains why the dipstick for checking oil level is at another place. This is another exclusive with the GF.
