PROMISED PERFORMANCE MONITOR 2001
121
ESCORTS - YAMAHA YD 125 7th
With its second bike amongst the top 10 vehicles on PPM ranking as well as having two bikes in the top three is a creditable performance by Yamaha-Escorts. Where the YD 125 falls short of its stablemate, the YBX, is in areas of the instrumentation and locks while the engine and transmission have a similar number of problems.
127
BAJAJ SPIRIT 9th
The second scooterette in the PPM has 32 more problems per 100 vehicles than the winner. Considering that the category average is 150, the Spirit is much better. The areas where the Spirit is poor are the handle and switchgear. The transmission, though complex, has surfaced with problems which are less than one-third the scooterette category average.
128
TVS SCOOTY 10th
The first TVS product to makes its appearance is the Scooty, at a lowly 10th place. The best-selling scooterette has very few problems in its engine and transmission but a large number of problems with its locking systems and in the miscellaneous items. This has pushed its PPM score to 128 problems per 100 vehicles.
129
TVS CHAMP 11th
The first moped makes its entry at number 11 in the overall list. A good overall package is badly let down by the problems in its engine even though the there were no problems reported for its transmission. The problems for the engine of the Champ were 128 per cent of the moped category average.
144
TVS FIERO 13th
We had expected to see the Fiero much higher up in the rankings but owners of the motorcycle seem to think otherwise. Even though it ranks 4th amongst the bikes it comes in only at the 13th overall spot. The bike's problems are equally distributed amongst all parameters with slightly more incidence in switchgear, instrumentation and miscellaneous items.
149
HERO HONDA CBZ 14th
The flagship of India's largest bike manufacturer manages only 14th place. Above category average problem incidence in instrumentation and an industry equalling problem incidence in the handle bring down the rating of this top end model. Even the engine is not free of problems with an incidence of 70 problems per 100 vehicles, which is close to the motorcycle category average of 78.
