Global Automobiles Rock100 motorcycle - Review by Dilip Bam
By launching their first 100 cc bike named ROCK.100, GLOBAL Automobiles Ltd. of Kolkata have done to two-wheelers what Ratan Tata has done for cars. While Ratan Tata's NANO car will cause traffic jams and bottlenecks on the road, Global Auto's Rock100 bike will solve the problems. Not only will the Rock100 occupy one-fifth the road space that Nano will occupy, it will also cost one-fifth the price of Nano. If Ratan Tata can sell car for one-lakh, Global is already selling Rock100 bike at Rs.19,990/-, which is one-fifth of price of Nano. Whlie on road price of Nano will be @ Rs.1,30,000/-, the on-road price of Rock100 will be Rs.26,000/-, which is exactly one-fifth the on road price of Nano. And while Nano will come @ Dussera or Diwali, Rock100 is already available in eastern India and will be available all over the country by 31.March, 2008.

Rock100 is powered by a 97.2 cc, 4-stroke, single cylinder air cooled engine having bore X stroke of 50 mm X 49.5 mm which produces 6.7 bhp (=6.8 PS) of power at 8500 rpm and develops a torque of 6.5 Nm at 6000 rpm at a compression ratio of 8.6. The cylinder dimensions (bore X stroke) of Rock100 are identical to (==same as) Hero Honda Splendor, which is the world's largest selling bike model and hence the most successful engine in the world today. The engine breathes through a MiCO UR4AC CV carburetor, ignition to spark plug (gap=0.65 mm) is through a CDi unit, which gives a mileage of 115 kmpL (under test conditions), and having a 10 litre fuel tank, Rock100 can travel a thousand km on one full tank of petrol. Forced lubrication (which is better and more effective than un-forced natural lubrication) is via a wet sump which keeps the four-speed gearbox well lubricated. Having a wheelbase of 1200 mm and a ground clearance of 170 mm, the 87 kg bike rides on tyre size 2.5o X 18 front and 3.oo X 18 rear. Stopping is by 110 mm drum brakes both front and rear. Electrics are 12 volt AC+DC, providing illuminating power to the 35 watt halogen headlight, and are backed by a 12 volt, 5 Ampere-hour battery.

While the above are the basic features and dimensions of Rock100, it offers a lot of upmarket goodies which even more expensive bikes do not. First and foremost is that even at this price the bike comes with self-start (button start) and Engine-Kill-Switch as standard. HH Splendor which costs almost double of Rock100, does not have these features. Rock100 also has electronic tachometer and linear gear indicator (as in Suzuki Zeus which again costs almost double of Rock100). Other goodies are: a CAT Megaphonic silencer with heat shield ; secondary air induction system to reduce pollution ; trapezoidal head lamp, and 5-step adjustable rear shock absorbers.

Available in four attractive colours: Maroon, Blue, Black and Grey, Rock100 comes with a 2-year warranty. The most unique thing about Rock100 and Global Automobiles is that they provide you with a toll free number to make enquiry. The number is 1800-345-3307, which you can call from anywhere in India without having to pay for the call. No other bike maker is giving such a facility. Rock100 is sure to ROCK THE COUNTRY !
